Q: How big is your house?
A: Our house (the Farmhouse) is 3,500 square feet on the main level. We have a 600 square foot bonus room up inside the roof trusses that is being used as storage and a theater room. Then we have 700 square feet of covered back deck and a 754 square foot attached garage.
Q: What floor plan are you using? Is it fully custom or did you purchase plans from a site?
A: It is fully custom. I drew it myself and then took it to a designer to put in all the official stuff that the county needed.
Q: Does your fireplace come with a plug? (so no wiring needed, just plug and play?)
A: Yep, Just plug it into the nearest outlet and turn it on! We love our Touchstone fireplace!
Q: What stain did you use for your living room floor? Colors & brands?
A: I used Minwax brand and I literally just grabbed all the colors i liked. Jacobean, espresso, dark walnut, ebony, etc. Then I even mixed them in all different amounts. I have so many different variations because I just wanted a ton of diversity. I will do and in depth video on the process and include the specific colors and mixtures that I used most.
Q: What type of plywood and thickness did you use for your family room?
A: 3/4 inch thick, 4’ X 8’ sheets of medium grade plywood. Nothing fancy, just what they had at Lowe’s that I liked the look of.
Q: What is your favorite way to save money?
A: Plan, plan, plan… and more planning. Shop around for the best deals and make sure you are getting only what you need – this avoids overspending. Do as much as you can yourself. Use every inch of all of your supplies.
That is why I created the Plan Your House course. The best way to save money when building a house is to plan your heart out. Find ways to save money by planning.
Q: What made you decide to owner build?
A: We knew we wanted to build but couldn’t afford it and at the rate of inflation, we would never be able to afford building our dream home. With Farmer busy farming, I had to step up and figure it all out. I new nothing and had to plan, make phone calls and even drew up our plans. It was a lot of work but like the saying goes – “Hard work pays off.”
